Principal Product Manager
Seniority Level: Principal
Industry: Information Technology & Services, Computer Software, Biotechnology, Biopharma, Pharmaceuticals
Employment Type: Full-time
Job functions: Product Management, Business Strategy, Roadmap Planning, Cross-functional Leadership
Location: Remote, flexible
Summary:
We are looking for a Principal Product Manager to maintain and execute the Science Exchange product roadmap in close partnership with the SVP of Product. The SVP defines strategic themes and investment priorities. The Principal translates that direction into sequenced initiatives, clear scope decisions, and predictable delivery. This is a senior individual contributor role within a small, high-ownership team operating in a complex, regulated environment. The role requires strength in both external market rigor and internal execution discipline.
About you:
- You have led complex, cross-functional initiatives where the scope was large and the path forward was not obvious.
- You are comfortable quantifying business value before committing engineering resources. You make tradeoffs explicit and use data to defend prioritization decisions.
- You know how to break large initiatives into smaller, value-aligned phases and define clear scope boundaries before detailed requirements are written.
- You partner deeply with Engineering to shape feasibility and sequencing early, rather than handing over fully formed documentation.
- You are capable of bringing structure to ambiguity while maintaining execution predictability.
- You are comfortable operating in a small, fast-moving organization where ownership is high and process is lean.
- You approach product decisions with systems awareness. You evaluate second-order effects, cross-domain dependencies, and long-term maintainability, not just immediate feature outcomes.
- Bring enough technical fluency to reason about data models, APIs, and system constraints, and to partner effectively with Engineering to ensure long-term architectural integrity.
About the role:
- Manage the product roadmap on a day-to-day basis, ensuring sequencing aligns with strategic priorities and measurable business impact.
- Conduct structured opportunity assessments, including TAM analysis, competitive positioning, customer insight synthesis, and business value modeling.
- Translate intake and high-level ideas into clearly scoped initiatives before detailed requirements are developed.
- Break large, cross-functional initiatives into sequenced, value-driven phases with defined scope boundaries and success metrics.
- Partner closely with Engineering to align on feasibility, assumptions, and sequencing prior to commitment.
- In partnership with a PM who owns detailed ticket authoring and release coordination, ensure backlog clarity, prioritization discipline, and sprint readiness. This role is accountable for initiative framing and execution alignment, not for writing every ticket.
- Run structured sprint kickoffs and ensure alignment on scope and success criteria.
- Mentor junior PMs and elevate product thinking, documentation quality, and decision discipline across the team.
Specific qualifications & requirements:
- 8+ years of product management experience in SaaS, enterprise software, or regulated environments.
- Demonstrated experience owning multi-quarter roadmaps and complex cross-functional initiatives.
- Strong analytical skills and experience modeling business impact and investment tradeoffs.
- Experience partnering closely with Engineering on scope definition and delivery planning.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to operate effectively in a small, high-growth environment.
Preferred qualifications:
- Experience in life sciences, biotech, pharma, or other regulated industries.
- Experience working in the marketplace, procurement, or enterprise workflow platforms.
- Experience mentoring or coaching other product manager
